What is a citation in an AI answer?

The Tasadr team · ·6 min read

A citation is a link an AI engine places beside a sentence in its answer, or under it, to say the information came from a particular page. It is the only route from the answer to your site, which is why it differs from your name mentioned without a link, and from your rank in search results.

  1. What is a citation in an AI answer?

A citation is the engine putting a link to your page among the sources of its answer, inside the text beside the sentence it took from you or in the list of sources under it, so the reader can open your page and check.

Some say "reference" or "source". At Tasadr (تصدَّر) we say citation and nothing else, because a quote can be text with no link, while a citation, for us, is always a link. It is one of the terms in the Tasadr glossary.

  2. How does each engine show its citations?

Each engine shows its sources its own way. This is what the engines' owners document about it, as we read their pages on 11 October 2026, and nothing they did not say.

    • ChatGPT: OpenAI says answers that search the web may include citations in the text, each opening its source, and that the Sources button shows the cited sources and other related links.
    • Gemini: Google says the Sources button sits at the bottom of the response or inline in it and opens a side panel with the links, and that if there is no button, Gemini gave no links for that response.
    • Perplexity: Perplexity says every answer carries numbered citations linking to the original sources, so readers can check them.
    • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: Google says both show links to supporting websites, and that a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and its site must not be excluded from them in Google Search Console's settings.
    • Copilot: Microsoft says the AI Performance report counts the citations displayed as sources in Copilot answers and Bing's AI summaries, so for Microsoft the citation is a published unit of measurement.

What do they have in common?

A citation is a link to one specific page, not to your whole site. So ask which page of your site was cited, not only whether your site was, because the page is what you edit next.

  3. How does a citation differ from a mention and a rank?

A citation is a link inside an answer, a mention is your name in the answer with no route to you, and a rank is your page's place in a list of search results. One site can have all three, or be missing some.

For every answer we record one of four outcomes, and use the same names for them on every Tasadr page:

    • Cited: your site's link is among the answer's sources, whether or not the engine named you.
    • Mentioned: your name is in the answer, with no link to your site.
    • Absent: an answer that neither cites your site nor names you.
    • No answer: the engine wrote no answer to the question that time, and it is never counted against you.

And where does rank fit in?

Rank says nothing about the answer: first place in Google's results does not mean the engine will cite your page. The difference between the two results is set out in rank or citation.

  4. What does a citation look like in a real report?

Real report · names hidden · 7 October 2026. We measured 8 questions that patients of a clinic group in Riyadh and Jeddah ask, on 8 engines, and the group's site was cited among an answer's sources on only 3 of the questions.

That was 8 answers out of the 61 the engines wrote. On the other five questions no engine relied on it, and the sites most often cited instead were an appointment-booking platform, a doctors' directory and a private hospital.

The full report, with its eight questions and who took the group's place on each, is the sample report.

  5. Where can you see your site's citations?

You see some of them in Google's and Bing's reports for site owners, and some only by asking the engine yourself: we found no comparable report for site owners from the chat engines.

    • Google Search Console: the Search generative AI performance report, since June 2026, counts impressions of your site's links in AI Overviews and AI Mode; it does not mention the Gemini app.
    • Bing Webmaster Tools: the AI Performance report counts the citations themselves, how many of your pages are cited, and the phrases the AI searched with when it retrieved them, across Copilot and Bing's AI summaries.
    • ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity: ask them your customers' questions and read the sources yourself. The method for Gemini, step by step, is in how can I tell if I'm being cited in Gemini?
  6. What does a citation change on your page?

It makes the sentence, not the page, the unit of work: an engine cites your page for a sentence it needs. So write sentences worth citing: the direct answer, the number with its date, the condition with the city's name.

Watch which page the engine cites, not your site as a whole. If it cites an old article instead of your service page, start there. What pages ChatGPT cites have in common is in cited compared with mentioned in ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions

Is a mention without a link a citation?

No. A citation is a link that takes the reader to your page; a mention without a link is your name alone, so the reader knows you exist but goes back to searching to find you. That is why a citation counts for more than a mention in the Tasadr score.

Why does an answer credit so few sources?

In the engines' documentation we read, we found no fixed number of sources per answer and no account of how they choose between them. What they do say is that the answer is built from pages their search finds, and that some answers carry no link at all, as Google says of Gemini. The room among the sources is limited in every answer.

Does a citation bring visits to my site?

It can: a citation is a link the reader can open, though they may stop at the answer. Check visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai and gemini.google.com in GA4, and note that Google counts AI Overviews and AI Mode visits within its Web search type in Search Console.

Does every engine show its citations the same way?

No. OpenAI says a ChatGPT answer that searched the web can carry citations in the text, with a Sources button listing them; Google says Gemini's Sources button opens a side panel with the links, and that AI Overviews and AI Mode show links to supporting websites. What they share is that a citation is a link to one specific page.
