How to know if your site shows up in ChatGPT and Gemini

The Tasadr team · Published · Updated · 14 min read

Ask ChatGPT and Gemini your customers' buying questions in their own words, then read each answer's links: a link to your site means cited, your name alone means mentioned without a link, neither means absent. Answers change from one time to the next, so never judge from one: repeat the question and date each result.

  1. What does it mean for your site to lead a ChatGPT or Gemini answer?

Your site leads the answer when the engine picks it as a source and puts its link in the answer. When your customer asks ChatGPT or Gemini about a service in their city, the engine writes one paragraph that points to two or three sources, and any site that is not among them has missed that answer.

What you look for in each answer is one of four outcomes, which every page of Tasadr (تصدَّر) calls by the same names:

    • Cited: your site's link is among the sources the engine relied on, even if it did not write your name. That is leading the answer.
    • Mentioned without a link: it wrote your name with no route back to you.
    • Absent: it wrote an answer that neither links to your site nor names you.
    • No answer: the engine wrote no answer to the question that time.

Why check ChatGPT and Gemini separately?

Because they are two different engines. ChatGPT searches the web before it answers many buying questions, and Gemini is Google's chat engine, which is not the same thing as Google AI Overviews, the summary above the search results. So your site can lead one of them and be absent from the other on the same question. How ChatGPT picks its sources is explained in how ChatGPT picks which businesses to recommend.

  2. How do you check your site yourself, today?

You need a table, the questions your customers type, and seven steps in order. You do not need any tool to start.

Write 10 buying questions in your customers' words

A buying question is the one typed before a purchase: it carries the service, the city and a condition that matters to the person asking, such as price, timing or delivery. Write it the way your customer types it on their phone, in their dialect, not the way you would title your page. How to choose the whole set is in how to choose the questions you measure on. Examples from Arab cities, in plain English here:

    • In Riyadh: "What is the best orthodontic clinic in north Riyadh?"
    • In Jeddah: "Which flower shop delivers the same day in Jeddah?"
    • In Dubai: "What is the best seafood restaurant for families in Dubai Marina?"
    • In Kuwait: "Which company is best for sofa cleaning in Hawalli?"
    • In Cairo: "Who is the best dermatologist in Heliopolis?"

Open a new chat that does not know you

The answer can be coloured by your chat history and by what the engine knows about you and your business. So open a new chat, switch off memory or personalisation if they are on, or use an account you have never asked about your business from. You want the answer your customer reads, not the one written for you.

Ask as your customer would, and read the links

Paste the question as you wrote it, without adding your site's name or a request to list sources, then read the answer to the end, together with the links the engine put inside it or under it. The link is what separates cited from mentioned without a link.

If the engine wrote its answer without a single link, nobody has been cited in it yet, neither you nor your competitor. Record whether it named you or not.

Record the result in a table

Each answer gets a row with five columns:

    • The question, as you wrote it.
    • The engine: ChatGPT or Gemini.
    • The date.
    • The outcome: cited, mentioned without a link, absent or no answer.
    • The sites cited instead of you, by name.

Repeat the check on another day

A chat engine's answer changes from one time to the next, in its wording and sometimes in its sources, because it searches afresh every time. One answer is not a measurement. Ask the same questions again on different days before you judge, and count a change as real only when it repeats.

    Ask from your customer's market

Always put the city in the question, because the engine builds its answer on the asker's words. Google's answers can also differ with the country they are asked from, so if your customer is in Riyadh and you are in Dubai, you may not see what they see.

    Work out where you stand

Ten questions on two chat engines give you 20 answers. Count how many cite you, how many mention you without a link, how many leave you absent and how many came back with no answer, and note the site most often cited instead of you. That is not the Tasadr score, but it is an honest first picture of where you stand today on ChatGPT and Gemini.

  3. How can I tell if I'm being cited in Gemini?

Ask Gemini the questions your customers ask, in their words, then open the sources under its answer: a link to your page means Gemini cited you; your name alone is a mention.

Five things to know before you judge:

    • Where Gemini puts its sources: Google says the Sources button sits at the bottom of the response or inline in it, and opens a side panel with the links. If there is no Sources button under a response, Gemini gave no links for it, so record it as mentioned without a link or absent, depending on what it wrote.
    • Search Console does not count the Gemini app: Google's Search generative AI performance report, announced on 3 June 2026, counts impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover's generative AI features. It does not mention the Gemini app, so do not look for Gemini citations there.
    • Visits from Gemini: in GA4, visits referred by gemini.google.com tell you a reader opened your link from an answer, not how often you were cited and nobody clicked.
    • Repeat before you judge: Gemini's answer can change from one day to the next, so ask the same question on different days. Why answers change, and how to tell a real change, is in why do ChatGPT's answers change, and when is a change real?
    • In Tasadr: we measure Gemini on every plan, the free trial included, and keep each verdict with the answer's excerpt, its sources and its date.
  4. How do you read the result of your check?

Each pattern in your table says something different about your site:

    • Absent on most questions: you have no page answering that question, or the engine cannot reach it. Start with one page.
    • Mentioned without a link: the engine knows your name but finds no page on your site to cite. Write a page that answers the question in plain text.
    • Cited on ChatGPT and absent on Gemini, or the other way round: each engine picks its sources its own way. Read the pages cited by the engine you are absent on.
    • No answer: a question nobody has won yet, neither you nor your competitor. An open opportunity for a page that answers it.
    • One competitor keeps coming back: that is your competitor in the answer, even if they are no competitor of yours in the market. Start with the question where they are ahead of you.

And what do you do about the competitor who keeps coming back?

Read their page beside yours, as set out in which competitor ChatGPT recommends instead of you, and why. And if you want to see where you rank among all the sites the engines cite for your questions, question by question and engine by engine, that is what the competitor comparison page shows.

  5. What about Google AI Overviews and the other engines?

ChatGPT and Gemini are a start, not the whole picture. Your customer may read the Google AI Overviews summary above the search results before opening any chat, or ask Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Copilot (Microsoft's answer inside Bing search), Claude or Grok.

The same check works on each of them, with two differences: Google's answers in AI Overviews and AI Mode can differ with the asker's country, and AI Overviews does not write a summary for every Arabic question in the first place. What sets each engine apart is on the eight AI engines we measure in Arabic, and the summary in detail on the guide to Google AI Overviews in Saudi Arabia.

  6. Why is a check by hand not enough on its own?

A check by hand answers for today, not for the month: answers change from one day to the next, your account, city and chat history can colour what you see, and ten questions on 8 engines mean 80 answers to read and record every time.

When a change is real rather than chance, and how to test it yourself in three days, is in why do ChatGPT's answers change, and when is a change real?.

  7. What does Tasadr add to your check?

Tasadr answers your check's question regularly, keeps every result with its date, and adds what a table cannot give you. How we measure is explained in how we measure the Tasadr score, and you can see all of it in a real report for a clinic group in Riyadh and Jeddah:

    • Questions in your customer's words and dialect, written for their own market.
    • Google's answers as your customer sees them in their country, not a generic version.
    • Repeated measurement of every question, so one lucky answer is never counted as a change.
    • An excerpt of the answer as evidence under every verdict, with the links the engine put in it.
    • The Tasadr score out of 100, with its range whenever a measurement spans one.
    • Who is cited instead of you, why, and what to change first.
    • An alert in your dashboard once a change is confirmed, not before.

How do you try it on ChatGPT and Gemini?

The free trial answers this guide's own question: 7 days with no credit card, for 1 site and 10 questions, on ChatGPT and Gemini, with two measurements, the first when you finish setup and the second on day 5. The paid plans measure up to 8 engines, set out on Tasadr's pricing.

  8. What do you do if your site is absent?

An action plan in five steps, starting from one question. The work as a whole is called optimising for AI answers (GEO).

Pick one question a competitor leads

From your table, pick the most important buying question on which one competitor keeps coming back. Do not start with ten questions at once, or you will not know which edit moved the result.

    Read their page beside yours

Where is the answer on their page? On which line? Does it give the price, the city and the timing? Usually you find the difference is clarity, not quality.

    Edit one page

Make your customer's question a heading, answer it underneath in two lines with the name, the city and the number, and add an FAQ, structured data (schema) and an updated date.

Make sure the engines can reach it

No crawler block in your robots file, no text that exists only after JavaScript has run, and no page behind a login.

Check again, and believe what repeats

Ask the same question on the same engine again after a while, on different days. We know of no fixed time after which an edit starts to show its effect, and any figure quoted for it is a guess. What decides the speed is in how long GEO takes to change the results.

  9. What are the common mistakes when you check yourself?

Six mistakes that make your check look better or worse than reality:

    • Asking about your business by name. The engine will find you, but your customer asks about a need, not your name.
    • Asking in English about a market that asks in Arabic, and reading an answer about another market.
    • Judging from one answer, or from one day.
    • Asking from your usual account, with a long history about your business.
    • Counting a mention without a link as a citation. A name alone does not bring the reader to you.
    • Checking ChatGPT alone, when your customer may read Google's answer first.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if my site is being cited in ChatGPT and Gemini answers?

Ask ChatGPT and Gemini your customers' buying questions in their words and dialect, and read the links in each answer: your site's link means you are cited, your name alone means you are mentioned without a link, and otherwise you are absent. Repeat the question on different days before you judge, or measure it with Tasadr free for 7 days. The method for Gemini, step by step, is in how can I tell if I'm being cited in Gemini?.

Can I find out whether my site leads ChatGPT without a tool?

Yes, for one question on one day: ask it your customer's question and read the links in its answer. But the answer changes from one time to the next, and a picture you can base a decision on needs every question measured repeatedly, kept with its dates.

Why does ChatGPT cite my site while Gemini does not?

Because each engine searches and picks its sources its own way. Read the pages Gemini cited on the same question, compare them with yours, and you will usually find what your page lacks for that engine: a clearer answer, the city's name or a plain number.

Is it enough to ask the engine about my business by name?

No. When you ask about your name, the engine searches for you and finds you, but your customer does not know your name yet and asks about a need in their city, in their own words and dialect. Check the questions they type.

How often should I repeat the check before I judge?

Never judge from a single day. Ask the same questions again on different days, and count a change as real only once it repeats. In Tasadr you get an alert about a change only once it is confirmed, never on a single answer.

How do I know which page of my site AI cites?

From the link itself: the link in the answer shows you the page the engine relied on, so record the page in your table, not just the site, and look at what your cited pages have in common. Google Search Console's generative AI report shows which of your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, and Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report shows which were cited in Copilot.
