What is zero-click search, and what does it mean for you?
The Tasadr team · ·5 min read
Zero-click search is a search that ends on the results page or in the answer: the asker reads what they need and opens no site. That is why an engine can cite you without sending a visit, so read citations and impressions in the search surfaces alongside your visits, not visits alone.

What is zero-click search?
Zero-click search is when a searcher finds the answer on the results page itself, or in the answer an engine writes, and the search ends without a click on any link to any site. In Arabic it is «البحث بلا نقرة», sometimes written «البحث بدون نقرة».
It did not start with AI: short answers and knowledge panels on results pages answered some questions before. But the answer an AI engine writes is longer and more complete, so more readers stop there, as the study below shows. It is one of the terms in the Tasadr glossary.
Why can you be cited without getting a visit?
Because the citation is the engine's decision and the click is the reader's. The engine may put your page's link among its sources while the reader finds the answer in the answer itself and never clicks: what they needed from your page reached them inside the answer.
In a Pew Research Center study published on 22 July 2025, which tracked the browsing of 900 US adults in March 2025, users clicked a traditional result link on 8% of their visits to a results page with an AI summary, and on 15% when there was no summary. They clicked a link inside the summary itself on just 1% of those visits.
Browsing sessions ended altogether on 26% of pages with a summary, against 16% of pages without one. The study is American, covers Google alone and spans one month, so do not read it as a rate for your market, but as a sign of the direction.
Google says on its page for site owners that clicks from results pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, meaning users are more likely to spend more time on the site. That is Google's reading of its own data, and it does not contradict the study: clicks can be fewer and longer at the same time.
What should you read alongside your visits?
Four numbers, each seeing a part the others miss:
- Citations: on how many of your customers' questions an engine links to you, question by question and engine by engine. The definition is in what is a citation in an AI answer?
- Impressions in Google's surfaces: counted for your links in AI Overviews and AI Mode by the generative AI report in Google Search Console, as in what is the generative AI report?
- Citations in Bing: counted by the AI Performance report. Bing's own guidelines say "a decline in clicks does not always indicate a loss of visibility", and advise monitoring impressions and citations.
- Visits that follow the answer: some readers who see your name in it search for it afterwards or type your address themselves. The method is in how do you see ChatGPT and Perplexity visits in GA4?
What does zero-click search look like in a Gulf market?
Illustrative example: a mother in Riyadh asks «وش أفضل روضة ثنائية اللغة في حي النرجس؟» ("what's the best bilingual nursery in Al Narjis?"). The answer gives her three nurseries with their fees and hours, with links to its sources beside them. She calls one using the number written in the answer and opens no link.
The nursery whose site was cited won a customer who left no visit in its site's report. The nursery absent from the answer lost a customer without ever knowing she asked. That is why measuring the answer itself holds up where measuring visits falls short.
What does zero-click search change on your page?
It changes what you write at the top. If the reader will take one sentence from your page inside the answer, make it a sentence that carries your name and the answer itself, with its figure and place, so they recognise you from it and contact you, not a generic sentence that would fit any competitor.
And it changes what you count as success: success is being cited on the questions your customers ask before they buy, and a visit is a bonus on top, as in how to measure the success of optimising for AI answers. Why this matters now is in why GEO matters now.
