How does Copilot pick sources in Bing, and cite you?
The Tasadr team · ·15 min read
Copilot is Microsoft's answer inside Bing search, written from pages in Bing's index. A citation starts with a page that is indexed in Bing, carries no tag that keeps it out of the answers, and answers the question in its first lines. Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report then shows which of your pages were cited.

What is Copilot in Bing search, and does it answer in Arabic?
Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant. In this guide we mean its answer inside Bing search: the paragraph it writes when your customer searches on Bing, with links beside it to the pages it built that answer on. Those links are what we call a citation in an AI answer.
Microsoft puts Bing search and Copilot under one set of guidelines for site owners. It says Bing and Copilot search experiences rely on the same core crawling, indexing and ranking foundation as traditional search, so the road to a Copilot answer starts in Bing's index and nowhere else.
If you are asking «هل copilot يدعم اللغة العربية» ("does Copilot support Arabic?"), the answer is yes: Arabic is on Microsoft's list of languages Copilot takes questions in and answers in, on the support page Microsoft last updated in September 2026. But the language of the question does not decide the sources. The sources are what Bing finds in its index.
This guide is part of the eight AI engines we measure in Arabic, where Copilot sits among the three search surfaces. What applies to Gemini alone is in how Gemini chooses its sources in Arabic, and cites you.
Why does the road to Copilot start in Bing's index?
Because a page Bing does not know gives Copilot nothing to cite. Bing's guidelines say a noindex tag keeps a page out of Bing search and out of Copilot experiences alike, so before you change a single sentence, make sure your important pages are in Bing's index at all.
Start by adding your site to Bing Webmaster Tools, Bing's dashboard for site owners. It lets you import the sites you have already verified in Google Search Console instead of proving ownership again. Then submit your sitemap and check which of your pages Bing knows and which it does not.
Bing's guidelines ask for four things that touch almost every site. Here they are in our words:
- A clean sitemap: canonical URLs only, matching the site as it is today, with deleted or redirected pages removed promptly and a last-modified date for every page.
- Bingbot not blocked in robots.txt: blocking it takes your pages out of the index Copilot answers from.
- Content that does not hide behind JavaScript: the guidelines warn against hiding critical content behind client-side rendering, and say content that cannot be rendered reliably may not be indexed or selected for grounding.
- One address per page: a page served from many URLs weakens Bing's confidence in picking one of them as a source. The fix is one canonical URL and permanent redirects from the rest.
How do you know Bingbot can reach your pages?
Open your site's robots.txt and look for any rule that blocks Bingbot, or blocks every crawler. Then inspect an important page from inside Bing Webmaster Tools. All the crawlers, and a ten-minute check of your own site, are in can AI engines read your site, and how do you check?
What is IndexNow, and why does it matter for Copilot?
IndexNow is a way for your site to tell the search engines that take part in it about every page that is added, updated or deleted, on the day it happens, instead of waiting for each engine's crawler to come by. IndexNow's own documentation says the URLs one participating engine receives are shared automatically with the others.
A site proves the request is its own with a small text file at its root that holds a key. IndexNow's documentation also says that an accepted request only means the engine received the URL, not that it will crawl or index it. It is a notice, not a guarantee.
Bing's guidelines tie IndexNow to Copilot directly. They ask you to notify Bing when a URL is added, its content is updated or it is removed, and say timely notifications help Bing refresh its index and reduce outdated or incorrect URL references in Copilot responses. That matters to any business whose prices or opening hours change from one season to the next.
On our own site, tasadr.ai, every new deploy has sent the URLs it changed to IndexNow since 11 October 2026. When we edit a page, Bing hears about it the day it goes live, without waiting for its crawler. We do not claim that this alone makes Copilot cite us: the notice speeds up the reading, it does not decide the choice.
Which tags keep your page out of Copilot's answers?
Four tags you place on a page, each with a different effect on Copilot. This is what Bing's guidelines say about each one, as we read them on 17 October 2026. A theme or a plugin can add them without the site owner noticing.
What each tag does to your page in Bing search and Copilot's answers, as Bing's guidelines put it Tag Effect on Copilot's answers When to use it noindex Keeps the page out of Bing search and Copilot experiences altogether For a page you do not want in search at all, such as a sign-in page or a cart noarchive Stops the page's content being used in Copilot responses Rarely; check your theme, which may have added it without you meaning to nocache Limits what Copilot takes from the page to its URL, title and snippet, so citations go less deep Not on a page you want as a source, as Bing itself advises nosnippet and data-nosnippet Stop Bing showing a caption from the page, and may limit the quality of Copilot's citations of it For a sensitive part of a page only, never the whole page What if noarchive and nocache are both there?
In Bing's first announcement of the two tags, on 22 September 2023, when the assistant was still called Bing Chat, Bing said content carrying both is treated as NOCACHE, and that content carrying either still appears in Bing's ordinary search results. Both tags touch the answer, not your place in the results.
How many sites fall into this without knowing?
In a check we ran on 14 October 2026 of 150 websites that AI engines cited in our measurements, one site's home page carried noarchive, so the page itself asks not to be used in Copilot's answers. We could not reach a verdict on 11 sites. The problem is rare, but silent: the site owner only sees it if they look for it.
So open the source of your important page, search it for the words robots and bingbot, and read what follows them, or ask your developer to. It takes minutes, and it can save you a long absence you would never find the reason for.
What does Bing's AI Performance report tell you?
It tells you where your site is cited in Microsoft's AI answers. Bing launched it on 10 February 2026 inside Bing Webmaster Tools, covering Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing and some partner integrations; the short definition is in what is Bing's AI Performance report? It has five parts:
- Total citations: how often your site was shown as a source in answers during the period, without saying where in the answer your link sat.
- Average cited pages: how many different pages of your site are shown as sources per day, on average.
- Grounding queries: a sample of the phrases the AI searched with when it retrieved your content.
- Page-level citations: which of your pages are cited more than the rest, which is where your work starts.
- Trend over time: how the number of citations moves from one period to the next.
What did Bing add in June 2026?
On 16 June 2026 Bing added four preview features: grounding queries classified by the searcher's intent, such as informational, commercial or local; those queries grouped into broader topics; citation share, the percentage of all citations shown for one grounding query that went to your site; and a comparison of one period against an earlier one.
Bing calls citation share an observational metric, not a ranking or a competitive scoreboard. It does not expose other sites' domains and does not represent a share of traffic, so it tells you your share, not who took the rest.
What does the report not tell you?
It shows no excerpt of the answer, does not measure ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, and does not name who was cited instead of you. Read it alongside a measurement of the answers themselves, as in what Google's and Bing's reports show about AI answers. Visits that reach you from Copilot belong in Google Analytics 4, and the method is in how do you see ChatGPT and Perplexity visits in GA4?
What makes your page a source for Copilot?
A page that stands on its own and answers one question in its first lines, with clear names and dated facts. Bing's guidelines say the same in other words: facts and definitions should be explicit on the page, and an important statement should not depend on something said on another page.
- One topic per page. Bing says pages focused on one primary topic are more likely to be selected for grounding, and advises that the title, headings and content share one intent.
- The answer at the top, with no long introduction before the topic, as the guidelines ask.
- One name for your business everywhere. Bing asks for clear, consistent names for organisations, products and places, and says this improves citation accuracy. Write your Arabic and Latin names the same way on every page; the idea is explained in what is an entity in search?
- Questions and answers written on the page, not inside a tab or a menu that opens on a click. Microsoft's guide to writing content advises against hiding important answers there, because AI systems may not render hidden content.
- Facts as text, not images. A price inside an image, or a table that exists only inside a PDF, is harder for these systems to read accurately, as Microsoft's own guide says.
- Honest updates. Bing asks you to update content when facts change, remove or revise what is outdated, and tell it through IndexNow when you add, change or delete a page.
One more step for a local business
Bing says in its announcement of the report that registering a business in Bing Places helps keep its key details, such as address, opening hours and contact information, current and eligible for AI answers to local questions. Write them there exactly as they are on your site and on your Google Business Profile.
Example: a car service centre in Riyadh
Illustrative example: dawzana-auto.sa is a car service centre in north Riyadh. Its customers ask Bing «وش أفضل مركز صيانة سيارات في الملقا يستقبل مواعيد مسائية؟» ("what's the best car service centre in Al Malqa that takes evening appointments?"). Its services page is long and opens with the centre's history, the opening hours are an image, and its head carries noarchive, added by an old plugin in the site's theme.
The centre fixes three things. It removes noarchive, writes its hours, district and booking method as text at the top of the page, and gives each major service, such as an oil change or a pre-purchase inspection, a page of its own with its starting price and the date that price was updated. Then it sends the new URLs through IndexNow.
We do not promise that Copilot will recommend it afterwards. But its page is now readable in Bing's index and holds the sentence the question needs. That much is in the site owner's hands; the choice stays with the engine.
How do you know if Copilot cites you?
Two ways, each completing the other. The first is the AI Performance report, which tells you how often your site was cited, on which page and for which phrase. The second is asking Bing your customers' questions in their own words, reading each answer to the end, and opening its links to see which of them are yours.
Ask the same question on different days before you judge: one answer is a snapshot, not a trend. The manual method, step by step, is in how to check whether your site leads ChatGPT and Gemini answers, and it works for Copilot as well.
At Tasadr (تصدَّر) we measure Copilot as a search surface, Microsoft's answer inside Bing search. We ask it your customers' questions in Arabic and in their dialect, and record for each answer whether your site was cited, mentioned without a link or absent, and who was cited instead. The Business plan measures it when it is among its engines, up to 8 chosen with you, and every plan is on Tasadr pricing.
What can nobody promise you?
Nobody can guarantee that Copilot will cite you. Bing's own guidelines say that SEO does not guarantee rankings or traffic, and that optimising for AI answers (GEO) does not guarantee grounding or citations in AI experiences.
The figures in this guide come from one check on 14 October 2026 and from Microsoft's pages as we read them on 17 October 2026. Bing changes its reports and guidelines from time to time; if anything here changes, we correct it and date the correction. What we can do is measure regularly and show you who was cited instead of you, and why their page was cited and yours was not.
